A set of papers and the archives of sci.nanotech can be had by standard anonymous FTP to nanotech.rutgers.edu under /nanotech/archives and /nanotech/papers

How and why is sci.nanotech moderated?

A paper by Eric Drexler ("bogosity" on the papers directory) explains the somewhat vulnerable status of a subject that is at the same time highly abstract and technical, not yet a reality of physical practice, and yet which promises to bring so many revolutionary changes.

Posting to sci.nanotech:

Postings to sci.nanotech should be technical, informational, or reasonably informed speculation (in that order of preference).

Specifically excluded are:

Cross-posted irrelevant material and chain letters will be discarded without comment; other non-posted submissions will be replied to. If a reasonable submission appears to have fallen into a black hole, it's probably because it has.

There are two exceptions having to do with formatting: If your posting has significantly more quoted ">> lines" than original material, or if it does not have a Subject: line, Rutgers netnews software will arbitrarily discard it after it has left my control. I try to catch such posts and edit down quotes, or add subject lines, but I sometimes forget or fail to notice.

To post to sci.nanotech, you can use the standard Netnews software (rn, vnews, nn, etc.), or somewhat faster and more reliable, mail your posting directly to nanotech@cs.rutgers.edu. In particular, some sites' posting software adds preheaders without Subject lines, causing the problem mentioned above.

All questions, as well as requests to be added to or deleted from the direct mail list (same postings as the netnews feed, for people without netnews access), can be sent to nanotech@cs.rutgers.edu

| There is now a technical sublist of the mailing list. If you
| ask to be added to the technical sublist, you will receive only
| the technical items and be spared all the ancillary speculation
| and discussion. Note that the regular list will also get all
| the technical items; there's no need to be on both.
