I did basically exactly what you described - mention NT to profs at Purdue, they sounded interested/interesting, I'm there now - BUT, their idea of NT is not mechanical...They are much more interested in using solution-phase chemistry to make molecular wires to connect small metal clusters. Sigh... (This may be a nice way to make really small circuits, but mechanosynthesis would be so much better.)
I say this as a sort of warning to others - Be sure of the program you're getting into. I may yet be able to do the research I really want to, but it may be tough.
